The Hei Tiki symbolizes humanity and ancestral lineage, connecting past, present, and future generations. In Māori lore, there are varying interpretations of Tiki's origins: some consider him the first man, created by the forest god Tāne, while others believe him to be a deity and ancestor of humanity. Regardless of his precise nature, Māori culture uniformly acknowledges humankind's descent from Tiki. Etymologically, "Hei" signifies a neck ornament, and "Tiki" denotes carved human figures in wood, bone, stone, or other materials. Consequently, a Hei Tiki is a carved human effigy worn as a necklace. Hei Tiki are traditionally passed down through generations, serving as heirlooms and symbols of protection and good fortune. Their significance and prestige have increased over time, accumulating meaning and narrative through generational use and storytelling.
